Like many counties in Kenya, Makueni youth face challenges like unemployment and limited access to resources that support socioeconomic change. There are numerous efforts by the local government, NGOs and community organizations to support the eradication of these challenges, but due to obvious reasons, it does not spread across to all youth in Makueni. To build up on the spirit of resilience and shaping a brighter future for more youth in the county, Jumuisha launched the Youth Asili YRB4CDSC program to empower youth in Kyuasini, Kikima, and Kikuswi, – Makueni, Kenya.
Youth Asili program enhances the organizations’ mission, to promote social change through skills development, by providing a platform for learning and growth while utilizing existing community systems. This is made possible by the existing relations with the different stakeholders, and thus Jumuisha provides a platform for learning, and building resilience. This is also an opportunity for youth to recreate avenues of contributing to growth and development in the community.
The program launch was attended by the National and County governments, youth, parents, community leaders, local community groups, and clergy. The local community was receptive and excited to be considered for this program, since it would empower the community by creating a resilient youth.
In a speech by Kaiti sub county youth officer Mr. Cyrus, youth should take up opportunities presented by different stakeholders to build self-reliance and growth. This would not only boost local development but also allow youth to tap in the available opportunities to enhance self-resilience and social change.
Executive Director, Karen Munyae, further applauded youth who were bold enough to step into the youth Asili project to enhance self-growth and grow into resilience. She further emphasized on stakeholders present to support the progress in building youth resilience and fostering belonging of youth in Mbooni and Kaiti, Makueni. Being an agricultural zone, youth can now find avenues of contributing to agriculture in the different value chains, while improving self.
This program is co-designed by Jumuisha, youth and the community to address local needs and this promotes inclusive planning, fosters the feeling of belonging and considers resilience in the long run. In the program, we emphasize on building relationships with peers, mentors and parents. This not only enhances the sense of belonging but also cultivates resilience in the long term.
