Jumuisha Initiative, a grassroots youth organization in Makueni County, Kenya, is transforming lives through TerraFund’s Landscapes program. Their focus is on empowering women and youth in finding sustainable solutions to environmental degradation in the community.
Between January and June 2024, the nonprofit organization engaged local leaders and other stakeholders, including the Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), County Government Departments of Agriculture, Environment and Devolution and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO). With KWS, they partnered to restore the heavily degraded public forest in Kibwezi-Muliluni, establishing a cultural center to attract community participation, boost biodiversity, and promote local tourism.
Jumuisha Initiative also partnered with the county government to offer beehives to community members which will provide an alternative livelihood source to the community members.
